queer as folk recap post, season one, episode three.
Welcome to episode three! I've raised some questions that I'd love some more insight into and of course these caps come with some pictures. All the caps are courtesy of KWAF. Thank you once again!
My recap partner sakesushimaki has a recap of episode two right here.
friday82 has the music of episode three right here.
So, I think that this is the first time that we’re introduced to a religious event in this series courtesy of Melanie Marcus. It establishes a faith based background that Gus will be raised in. Wonder what his father thinks about that! Hey Emmett, I didn’t know what a bris was either. It’s okay. I wouldn’t have thought that it was a brisket though.
Brian once again is a no show because “something came up” with Troy. Well, this character doesn’t have a name but he gets used again in a later episode … several later episodes. Queer as Folk was kind of known for reusing characters starting with this episode! We see the Rabbi again and we see man in gym again.
Hysterical moment of the episode? Emmett’s new friend Katsuo.
Katsuo: Joos?
Emmett: No. Juice (points to glass). Jews (points to the room).
What’s up with Michael telling him that what he said was about love after he heard the translation from Melanie? I know that it’s meant to be a joke but it just seemed cruel.
Justin: That’s all I was to him – a fuck.
First of all, this has to be Justin’s pool. Justin went to visit Molly for her birthday and I assume that that was in Justin’s backyard since it was Molly’s party. This is the same pool and yard that was in that scene in a later episode.
Daphne and Justin seem well suited for one another. They even indulge in their interests and rebellion together. They’re sharing a cigarette and Daphne reveals that she had a boyfriend last year. The fact that Justin didn’t even know that she had a boyfriend last year raises some questions. If they’re best friends, why did she never tell him? It’s different that he never told her outright that he was gay. Maybe he just assumed that she knew and didn’t have to tell her. So, maybe he and Daphne were fighting the previous summer and she broke up with him before he ever knew. Maybe they didn’t talk as much as they do now. Maybe they’re closer now than they were then. I feel like I need fic to make me feel better about all of this.
Love that she pushes him in the pool. I needed to include a cap of Justin’s flailing hilariousness.
Emmett faints at the thought of cutting off a tip of Gus’s penis. Michael finds out what the bris is and immediately calls Brian. Brian comes in and ruins the party because he doesn’t want someone changing who his son is. What do you guys think about this move? Lindsay and Melanie are the parents but Brian does want to be involved in Gus’s life. He even goes as far as to ruin a sacred religious ritual in Melanie’s family to be involved. I definitely think that that’s a moment of realization for him. It hits him in the diner that he did this for his son, wanting him to remain who he is because that’s who Brian is. That’s probably why he seems so melancholy at the diner.
Speaking of the diner – this is the first time that we see Debbie interacting with everyone in the group and she has a great rapport with all of them. We also see the beginning of the Wonderful World of Debbie’s Shirts.
I have nothing to say about Lindsay and Melanie’s argument. Lindsay loves Brian more than Melanie. That’s what Melanie says and it’s true. The end. I will say … why the fuck do these women not wear bras? I haven’t seen this much nipple through shirts on television since watching the later episodes of Friends.
No caps of this but Ted’s insecurity is palpable when he runs into Blake. What is this man doing hanging around this group of guys? I mean, really. How do you think that he met everyone? He seems older than them, completely insecure, but yet it somehow fits. Also, he doesn’t really let on in any way that he has a secret crush on Michael. They talk in the street, a serious conversation but they still appear as good friends, arms around one another. No evidence of that crush.
Another thing is they’re all walking down the street away from the diner, right? Brian, Emmett, and Katsuo are ahead of Ted and Michael. Ted and Michael stop to talk in the street. They turn around and head back to Woody’s (which is behind them at this point because they all walk right by it). Then, Brian and gang go to Woody’s to play pool. This all leads the question … where were they headed in the first place if they ended up backtracking to Woody’s?
Meanwhile, Daphne and Justin go to Liberty Avenue in which Daphne points, stares, and is loud. This embarrasses Justin and that interaction is hysterical.
Daphne: And stop acting like you’re so experienced.
Truer words have never been spoken, Daph.
“Where does Brian have a tattoo?”
“In a place you’ll never see.” – Uh … his finger?
Love Daphne’s reaction to seeing Brian for the first time. “That’s Brian? God, he’s so old! And skinny. You can do way better than that.” Not the usual reaction to Brian Kinney! Guess that means that Daphne’s not as easily impressed by his mystique. She’s so on to him before everyone. Daphne never stood for any of Brian’s shit and she looked out for Justin too … though she also went along with him to find Brian at Babylon.
“Leave him alone. He’s all right.” – “In fact, it’s kind of sweet.” – Brian Kinney, 103. This is the first and only time that he’s called Justin sweet in a round about way. Brian hearts his teenage stalker but this isn’t a surprise because Brian loves being the center of someone’s universe.
“Sweet?! I thought we got rid of him. I thought he was out of our lives.” – Michael still hates Justin.
Michael continues to act straight in front of Tracey and her group of friends. For someone who believes that there are only two kinds of straight people in the world, I wonder how he’s allowing Michael to get away with this straight acting, act. On the other hand, he is trying to make sure to be a complete pain in the ass by telling Tracey that Michael likes her.
What happened to Babylon’s memberships? Vic’s got a card that he gives to Justin to use. Bouncer even takes a look at it and allows the two under aged kids in. Guess Babylon just thought it was a hassle since they all just wandered in after this. Well, mostly.
Justin’s already ready to go but Daphne says, “What for? We just got here.” – Way to go Daphne! She’s probably excited by the lights, the people, the music, but she’s also encouraging to her BFF to go in and go get his man!
Tommy Hagar the name of Brian’s drug guy. No relation to Sammy?
Michael and Brian in the bathroom … you can just feel how much Michael wants Brian. Even though Brian’s high, I don’t think that he’s high enough to consciously fuck his best friend in a bathroom stall which makes me believe that he doesn’t want to do it at all. * nod *
Something I never noticed is when Daphne and Justin are moving through the crowd Justin says check out the stairs so they can see Brian and Brian says to check out the bar to look for the guy he lost at Woody’s.
“Dungeon Master Don who wants to mummify me. Have you noticed that the world’s getting weirder?” – I laff and laff. Thanks, Emmett. “How do you say tacky little cocksucker in Japanese?” lmao one more to Emmett.
Ted at the bar, that’s when his crush on Michael becomes evident as opposed to before on the street where it wasn’t as obvious. Also, Ted says Blake has crystal meth in his eye. Foreshadowing?
AHHHH! BAD BRIAN DANCING! WITH ARM MOVEMENTS! He better be whispering in their ears how he’s the best fuck ever and that’s how he lures them in and not with the bad dance moves. I mean, he’s hot, that’d reel me in but dancing? No.
Poor drugged out Ted. It’s definitely understandable that he’d be the most susceptible out of all of them when it comes to drugs. He had a very obvious crush on Blake, Blake went after him, offered to drug him out during sex, and he said yes. The imagine of his overdose is interwoven between images of Brian and Justin’s little song and dance. Why do you think this is? Is it showing a possible death between the possibility of Brian and Justin beginning their lives/new relationship with one another? I’m thinking, yes.
This is one of my favorite scenes in the entire series. Justin takes Daphne’s advice, makes Brian jealous, Brian can’t stand that these two guys are touching what he believes is his, and he immediately takes Justin away from them. Brian has Justin and that’s the end of it. Brian lifts him up proudly, gives him several kisses and licks, and it ends with them as the focus on the screen and Michael watching them on the dance floor.
In conclusion, Justin is fucking fearless and totally wins all but especially Brian. :)
Thank you for reading this week! Apologies for the tardiness. It's been a busy, busy week. I also have more and more nostalgia coming up soon because that's how I roll, yo.

The last dancing scene will never ever get old. Cheeky Justin for the win!

Justin totally pwns all with his dance of temptation.

zomg, I knoooow! the only time I recall Lindsay wearing a bra is in... 110? when Mel tells her she tapped into her inheritance (?) so Linds could stay at home and raise Gus. It was right before they started fucking, so talk about bra redundancy. Maybe they learned their lesson? But when Linds is at work, braless, in a thin, tight shirt, charming the charming old man to buy that impressionistic painting, it's kind of :| Get a lunch break and go make out with your wife, Linds! Stop visually molesting unsuspecting old men.
“That’s Brian? God, he’s so old! And skinny. You can do way better than that.”
Brian did NOT look old! :[ he looked 25, tops! No cool points for Daphne in that scene. Hmph.
Daphne: And stop acting like you’re so experienced.
Truer words have never been spoken, Daph.
“Where does Brian have a tattoo?”
“In a place you’ll never see.” – Uh … his finger?
Heee!
I missed spunky!Daph in later seasons. She was so adorably bitchy in early s1 <3 Maybe seeing Brian naked changed her forever.
Why's season one so awesome? I forgot how much I want to rewatch "let's hear it for the boy". And I love how it was interweaved with the scene of Ted going into a coma. Do we have Brits to thank?
Recap ftw!

You do? I find myself cringing every time - I guess they wanted to contrast things, but I don't like it, it breakes the flow of both scenes and just feels forced. Thank god for youtube clips that rectify this.

They're harshing my B/J squee :|
no subject
Yep, that's what happens, and Ted's scene deserves better.
Also harshing B/J squee is fucking crimnal :D

lmao but that's obviously how she sells those paintings! I really don't understand the justification of them not wearing bras especially in the earlier episodes. It seems like such an insignificant thing in the bigger picture but all I can think now is that they wanted to interest the small number of straight males interested in the show and needed to show them tits or something.
Hahaha I know. I don't know what Daphne was thinking with the old comment. Brian certainly turned into her type after he complimented her and kissed her on the cheek. I really wish that we could've seen more Daphne in the later seasons. I don't even think anyone knew Justin was still living with her since he was over at Brian's so much in S4. At least she was there for the important moments in Justin's life during this series and I guess that's what matters.
I totally forgot about the Brits for the entire beginning of this show. Hmm. Now I have to check out the series to see if they did that with their Ted's death.
Woot! Thank you!

*nods with you* I don't think he ever wanted Michael in that sense. He was manipulative and knew Michael found him hot, and he used that attraction to control their relationship, but he never wanted to f*** him. And he wasn't nearly as in control as he would've liked to be. Michael, on the other hand, was his biggest enabler, and apologist -- but also did everything to make sure no one else got close to Brian either. From the 2nd episode, we saw him badmouth Brian to Justin to warn him away, calling him a prick etc. In fact, in the very first episode, he twisted the hospital going story in front of Emmett to make Brian look bad and himself look like the victim.
With Michael it was always whine, whine, whine..... I hated that about him, and was the reason why I never warmed up to him.
Geez, why am I talking about Michael here? Great recap. Love Justin taking claim over Brian in his insidious way. He always had the balls Michael never did. :)
no subject
I think I was okay with Michael around S5 but not before then. He was the neverending fountain of whine, wasn't he? Ugh.
Thanks for commenting though! :)

*feels so speshul over being called 'recap partner'*
I love how Emmett responds completely randomly to Katsuo’s babbling :D
I’m gonna make “It’s called corned beef, sweety. It’s a Jewish delicacy.” my ultimate answer to just about everything!
What’s up with Michael telling him that what he said was about love after he heard the translation from Melanie?
I noes! What's he doing running around all day promoting stupid things and twisting everything? Did he honestly think he'd be helping Emmett through not telling the truth about Katsuo? Ack.
Justin's house is NICE. And just to keep my sucker-for-Daph&Justin-friendship soul happy, can we please agree that yes, they are much closer now?
As for Brian glamorously terminating the bris... I don't know what to really make of it all, to be honest. Well, I'd think that the whole circumcision issue should've been discussed with Brian beforehand and not just delivered in an invitation that no one understands. Then again, for Brian being so adamant about not wanting to play the "dad" part, it is shitty of him to just barge in there and boot the whole thing. And although I'm generally overinterpreting everything, I don't see the circumcision as that deep or profound a cut (woe for pun) into Gus' life or as "not accepting him the way he is". Therefore, I kind of feel the commotion level on Brian's count set too high, actually. Huh. I might need to ponder that one some more.
Oh and I don't really believe that Lindsay loves Brian more than Mel. In my opinion, she just has a major kink for Brian and his way of life. Or something. :]
where were they headed in the first place if they ended up backtracking to Woody’s?
lol, exactly! I had to rewatch the scene just to be sure I saw that correctly.
Michael: Will you listen to you? Always putting yourself down.
Ted: Well, better me than them – I’m gentler.
Does anyone else find Brian’s hotting-up-that-trick routine at Woody's somewhat embarrassing? What with the glances from across the bar and all. Unnecessary work on top of it, I’d say.
And why is he running after that guy? WHY!? I’m so appalled.
And WHAT tattoo? They so can't be talking about the "resist" tat on his finger. Also, wouldn't we have seen that tattoo at some point? Seriously. The only part of his body that we did not see in all its glory is in fact his dick (and balls maybe) and I highly doubt that he'd mutilate that in any way.
Michael and Brian in the bathroom … you can just feel how much Michael wants Brian.
*weeps*
And-and how he smells the towel Brian throws at him earlier in the steam room?
Jesus. The early Brian/Michael dynamics freak me the hell out.
“Dungeon Master Don who wants to mummify me. Have you noticed that the world’s getting weirder?”
– I laff and laff.
And I laff some more :D
AHHHH! BAD BRIAN DANCING!
*crawls into corner and rocks back and forth*
But what does Brian say? Argh! Plus Mikey’s oh-so profound “He says it for all of us”? Do not get.
At least Brian's potential trick Mr. Shiny Shirt can't dance either.
Also, am I missing some overall theme in this episode or why is everyone wearing these shimmering shirts of badness?
The cap you used of Justin entering the dance floor in which he's standing under the violet/green lightning? I saw someone using an icon from that exact shot that said "eggplant", rofl!
I'd definitely say that they were going for contrast with the Ted OD'ing scene vs B/J 'letting hear it for the boy'.
Man, can Emmett/Peter dance or what? The moves he displays up on that 'balcony' in the last shots are so awesome! *iz fan*
Great recap and I lurve your screen cap selection! <3

I do like the idea that Daphne and Justin have become closer friends since the previous year. It just seems like that's the more likely scenario since she didn't know things that he didn't tell her and he didn't know things that she didn't tell him. Yes, they're definitely the best of friends now.
Yeah, I agree with what you said about Brian and the bris. For a Dad that doesn't really want to be a Dad (even though we can see that he does) that's a pretty harsh reaction and response. There's no reason for Melanie or Lindsay to discuss it with him since they are the parents. On the other hand, they call him the father instead of the sperm donor so ... confusion occurs. But, I agree with you that a circumsion isn't definitive of who Gus is as a person. Brian probably just doesn't like the idea of the tip of a penis being hacked off for any reason. Though, later, we do find out that Brian is circumsized.
Yes! I totally agree that the work that Brian is putting into that trick is ridiculous. Come on, Brian doesn't go after anyone. Why does he look so desperate this time? Maybe because it is the trick that got away and he's determined but ... still. Also, yes, we don't see a tattoo. It's yet another inconsistency that they don't stick with.
Oh yeah, the Michael "he says it for all of us" - wait a minute, no he doesn't. I understand that they can be talking about the Brian mystique again and what he says to hook them all in but ... no. He never fucked you Michael so he doesn't say it to you. I'm sure he's just like, "Wanna suck my ten inch cock" or something. Nothing profound or deep.
I also don't know why they're all wearing shiny shirts. I remember they existed in 2000 (because I had one) but I only wore it for a concert and I didn't see people out and about wearing them.
Someone used that green cap and said eggplant? What the fuck does that even mean? I'm long past trying to understand bad iconers. Don't even bother.
Oh man, I've always imagined that Peter was this total club kid and only left that world when he joined Queer as Folk, lol. He did talk about his experiences a lot so I imagine he danced it up with many a man.
Thank you! Screencaps definitely just help me remember talking points. It helps that KWAF has a lot of those caps. I do plan on doing my own cap collection at some point. Too many projects these days, hee. But they're all fun.
no subject
It means that Justin looks like an eggplant in that cap, what with the green top and the violet body, and the icon proclaimed that! I didn't get it at first, because I didn't give the lightning that much attention, but when I did I couldn't stop loling. Oh sorry, you didn't want me to explain. :x
Wouldn't you love an Emmett/Justin tearing it up on the dance floor scene? <3 A scene like this would totally rock my world.
Though, later, we do find out that Brian is circumcized.
We do? *blinks* I don't even remember that.

Aw, I'd love to see Emmett and Justin dancing together. They do in fic!
Melanie says Brian is circumcised when she looks at the picture Justin drew of him in episode 107. I also totally can't believe that I remember that. At least I think it's 107. It's the one where Justin has the art show.
no subject
I know, right? All the friggin time! Sigh.
Melanie says Brian is circumcised when she looks at the picture Justin drew of him in episode 107.
Oooh okay, thanks! But I believe it'd have to be 1x06. 1x07 is mostly about Justin's dad "dealing" with the homoseshualatie (remember the hot B/J smex parallel to Craig going through the sketch pads?) and the Brian vs David thing.
Uh-huh. That's one of the very few (weep) Season 1 eps I can actually still assign to the episode numbers.
Btw, you reminded me that I planned on setting up my own cap collection as well, but alas, it went good for about one or two episodes (and even then I only capped specific scenes that I wanted to iconize or something). Capping a whole episode through I'd end up with 40,000 caps because I can't bring myself to lower the rate of capped frames, afraid I'll miss a cute face or hand gesture or whatever. :/

lol! I had the same problem with my caps. I was doing the caps for

Thanks for doing this. =)

Of course! I definitely need this rewatch.

fashionablylate and I don't have any smart things to contribute either (okay, I rarely ever do :)), but I wanted to say that I enjoyed the recap. It reminded me again how much I love Daphne! :) Also, for some reason, the scene between Brian, Michael and Tracey is one of my favorites.no subject
That was a pretty funny scene. straight!Michael tries so hard to be straight and Brian comes along to just kind of ruin that for him or make it as miserable as possible.
