well, happy cmas queer as folk fans!

Say what? What is this? Well, honestly, drinking hot chocolate and eating gingerbread men definitely put me in the mood for Christmas but you know what else does? Fanfic. Nothing says Christmas like fanfic written for the holiday. I'm pretty sure I holed myself up one year to just read and read and I do hope that you do the same. Or if you don't, just glance at the names and enjoy the nostalgic kick to the past!

A gigantic, ginormous, huge thank you to the v. v. talented and awesomesauce [livejournal.com profile] url_girl for making the kick ass Cmas graphic! I also direct you to her past awesome icon contributions here, here (made for the Snowin' and Blowin' Challenge), here, and here, here, here, here, and here!

THE LIST:

1. [livejournal.com profile] bigboobedcanuck brought us the 12 Years of Christmas and this is so my canon forever and ever. You just spend year after year with them and it's like you're a fly on the wall.

2. E and E brought us the 12 Days of Christmas in which they take us on a journey that you can only take with Brian and Justin.

3. I spend every year with Rizabeau's epic Sugar Plum Fairies. I hear that. Don't laugh. It's not epic as in the best thing that I've ever read and you have to ignore the "baby's" and long, long passages that are probably difficult to get through. But, you know what? I don't care! There are adorable babies in it, more in-character moments than out of character moments, and it brings together the whole gang featuring Brian and Justin, of course. How wrong can that be?

Part One
Part Two
Part Three

4. There's Danny's Gift Gabbing which I haven't read in a while. But, if you like that furniture series, the Jealousy series (WHICH I LOVE), you'll enjoy this!

5. Randall has a series of Christmas related fics here that I will always rec out just because. I'm a fan of The Other Side of the Fence. That has some ... holiday themes in it.

6. untitled!Christmas fic by [livejournal.com profile] windtossed right here. Short but sweet.

7. [livejournal.com profile] reinabelle's Mistletoe and Ho Ho Ho because CHRISTMAS SMUT WITH CHRISTMAS LOVE AND HOW CAN YOU RESIST THOSE COMBOS?

8. [livejournal.com profile] severina2001's Of Comfort and Joy. You know what [livejournal.com profile] severina2001's fic feels like? It's like, sitting with a mug of warm apple cider, grabbing a blanket, and settling in comfortably. It's like that. This one has scrabble and Brian and Justin being epic. What else do you need? Oh, I know. More fic from her! A Non-Traditional Christmas Feast aka [livejournal.com profile] amelialourdes' heart clenches like a clenching thing. The Truth in which Justin is hungry. You'll see.

9. [livejournal.com profile] mclachlan has Wreck of the Dayhere. Brian doesn't do Christmas. Psh, yeah right.

10. [livejournal.com profile] suzvoy (I knew you had one!) has Quack which is totes not a Christmas story ... except it totes is.

11. Last and not least (not like any of these were in order of epicness) was the Snowin' and Blowin' Challenge. Geocities died and took our beautiful fic with it but it was pretty much the most awesome challenge done for the holidays. Pretty much. Many, many wonderful pieces of fanfic came out of there and if I sat here and described them all to you, I'd be here all night.

So, how about you just look through them and enjoy that holiday feeling that washes over you.

You can download it here: Snowin' and Blowin' Challenge - Fan Fic. It's a .rar file so extract it to open the files!

That should keep you all occupied for now. More to be added when I have time to go through the wonderful helpings that our fandom gave to us. Enjoy these!

MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

I've been on a Christmas reading spree, too, and have given most of these a reread already. (Great minds *do* think alike, obvs) I love Sugar Plum Fairies and, damn! I wish she'd write the middle part of that series. You think it's a lost cause? Thanks for posting, bb!

[identity profile] amelialourdes.livejournal.com 2010-12-26 07:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man. I can't get enough of those kids! I hope one day she'll just wake up and want to write them again. It's been three years but we never know! Ha. You're v. v. welcome, :D

Snowin' and Blown' was awesome. Anyone new to the QAF community really needs to download those fics. In fact all these recommendations are like pulling out old ornaments and reliving a memory with each one! Thank you!!!!!!

[identity profile] amelialourdes.livejournal.com 2010-12-26 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? They were the Christmas fics that other Christmas fics should look up to.

In fact all these recommendations are like pulling out old ornaments and reliving a memory with each one!

Aww, that is a perfect description! Thank you!

A Treat!

This is wonderful; I've read some of these, but not all, and I'm glad to get another copy of Gift Gabbing. I really liked that one, and had a copy, but it's missing the last page.

I love getting the file to download. So much easier than trying to copy things myself to view offline, during the times when I'm out of wi-fi reach, or having yet another bout of trouble with my router.

Thanks for the entertainment. Just the thing when you've been snowed in since Sunday.

[identity profile] amelialourdes.livejournal.com 2010-12-29 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I completely agree. I'm trying to learn my lesson and saving some fics because I should be worried that the site will go down or the user will disappear. I really need to start being more diligent about that.

Sounds like the perfect thing to do while snowed in! I can't wait to have the long weekend to sit down with most of these.

Thanks for the comment!

Jumping In

[identity profile] velour-noir.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I initially started with LJ by commenting about someone's QAF website, and she was an LJ user, and so on and so forth. I always liked reading the fiction, but I didn't usually do it on LJ, but rather through various story sites such as bjfic.net, Xie-Xie's site, things like that.
Unfortunately, by the time I got around the joining, the series was over. I've made comments to individual authors about stories, but often by the time I read the story, it had been in circulation for quite a while, so there was no new discussion.
Your list of questions and memories intrigued me; it seemed like a second chance to participate in a discussion about my particular QAF rants and raves--or at least to read those of other people. Is this a particular community to join? This sounds like fun.

[identity profile] amelialourdes.livejournal.com 2010-12-30 06:04 am (UTC)(link)
There are a couple of communities that I'm aware of that are focused on revisiting Queer as Folk. Are you looking for episode discussions, fic discussions, something specific or something general?

QAF Communities

[identity profile] velour-noir.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry I'm just getting to answer this. I saw your question on my Blackberry; but I can read things on that dreadful device, however, answering is another story; and the next thing you know, you can't find the post.
Anyway, I am not looking for anything specific. Probably more towards episode discussions than fic. I like reading the fic, but I often would hesitate to critique anything when (a) I certainly can't do any better, since I can't write fiction, and (b) the author would be seeing any critical comments.

I kind of liked your memory list of the "favorites," to which I'd initially responded, but I don't know if that's a community, or just a general journal entry.

I feel as though I would like to start over, and discuss the shows the way I would have done when I was watching the series in the first place if I'd known anyone else that watched it besides my husband.

I guess I've just had the feeling of coming late to the party. I watched QAF from the first minute of the first episode; but I never read anything about it, or got involved in any boards, or anything like that ironically enough, until the series ended. I had missed Episode 512, and didn't want to watch 513 until I'd seen it. So I ended up on a downloading odyssey eventually managing to get the whole series on my computer, as well as various fan videos.

When I finally watched 513, it was past the time to have much discussion with my husband about it, and I ended up going on a board to see general comments. The next thing you know, I was going backwards, seeing things written from the beginning of the show and seeking out websites related to it. I made a comment to the owner of one site, comparing some things in my own life; and then wrote about it. She posted my story on her LJ, I opened up my own account to respond to comments, and so on and so forth. I eventually met LJ members in real life, and am still in touch with some.

I ended up drifting out of regular posting, and a lot of my original contacts have moved on, since they already did the fan thing. Now I know people who have seen the show, but they mostly saw the LOGO version--which is like watching a censored George Carlin show; too much left out. Plus, most of the people I've known who watched it were young gay men, and they aren't interested in the same aspects.
I did manage to shock one, when he looked at my Zune, and saw some show highlights in their unedited versions. I thought he was going to have a stroke, he kept saying "oh my God, you have porn on your Ipod." Besides the fact that it isn't an IPOD, it's not exactly porn.
Well, maybe soft porn.

Anyway, that's my long story, so where do you think I'd like to visit?

[identity profile] amelialourdes.livejournal.com 2011-01-05 05:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Like you said, I think a lot of the older fans of the show or fans since it's began won't be posting about the show regularly. I think I have a lot of people who were once very active in fandom on my friends list because I befriended them over the years. I jumped into fandom around Season 3 which is when I started watching the show. But, I've seen those people fall into different interests or drift away, which is perfectly fine. Again, like you've said, they've already done the fan thing. I have a very hard time letting go of things so I'm still on a QaF kick 7 years after joining fandom. I'm not as fervent about it now as I was but I'm still very active in the community.

Yeah, watching the show on Logo is just ridiculous. That's no way to watch the show. There have been many people who've just watched it on YouTube and that's equally ridiculous.

That said, there's a community just for you! It's called [livejournal.com profile] qaf_rewind and they do an entire rewatch of the series. I was doing my own rewatch here. I think you can find them underneath my "qaf recap" tag. I was doing it with [livejournal.com profile] sakesushimaki and I'd love to get it started again since it did generate conversation. I just got a little busy and didn't have time for it. But, episode discussions are pretty thorough in [livejournal.com profile] qaf_rewind and plenty of people there who are watching it again and are interested in more in-depth conversations about the episodes. They're in S4 now but I'm sure they'll start all over again during the new year! Hope you enjoy it. :)

Recapping and Revisiting

[identity profile] velour-noir.livejournal.com 2011-01-06 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds good to me.
I had been a regular poster a while back, and I don't know exactly what happened that I stopped posting. I've stayed in touch with several of the people on a personal level, and when we get together we may talk QAF; but as I said, I think the problem was that I was entering after the first wave of fans, so it seemed as though the party was well underway. It drove me crazy looking back at boards, because I would have liked to respond, but at that point, it didn't seem worth it.

I did hook up with a few groups when Randy or Gale were doing plays, but that was mostly discussing stalking techniques:)

I would be interested in finding links to download or read as much of the fiction as possible, because there were some stories I would have liked to copy before BJfic.net went down.

I am still attached to the show, because it has a lot of good connections for me. I have had fun with meeting fans, and the show had a personal connotation for me that will always have fond memories. When I first saw the show; I was appalled at the Brian/Justin thing, because of the age difference. I didn't have problems with the m/m, but I was horrified at Justin's age and appearance. Randy looked about 12; and I had a little blonde 12 year old too at the time, and I was growling over that happening with my son.

I think it was the prom that melted me, and over time, I reconciled the age thing. By season 3, I remember thinking it was strange that for me, the hottest couple on tv were two men.

At some point, I even said that if my son took up with someone who looked and kissed like Brian Kinney, then not only wouldn't I have him arrested, I would probably pay him a stipend to stay around.

You know, my son has never listened to a damned word I said, but that he picked up on. So when he was 16, and he wanted to date a guy who was 23, he had the line, "well, you said...."

For the record, Chris did no look nor kiss like Brian, so I didn't have to pay the stipend; it's more like a consulting fee in the form of taking him to shows. My son and Chris aren't together any more, but we still see one another. Chris is usually my reporter when Randy is going to be in a show--Chris is the muse of all things Broadway.

So, I still have warm fuzzies and don't want to let go. Being seen as "the cool mom who thinks gay porn is hot," has given me a wonderful reputation, and allows people to overlook the fact that half the time, I would forget to comb my hair.

So, I'll look up QAF rewind, and if you have any random discussion points that occur to you, then mention them.

Thanks, looking forward to chatting.
