Thoughts. Cutting them!

- Sean Hayes is a really, really wonderful host. He's funny, delivers jokes really well, and keeps things rolling right along. I love it. I love him! Go Sean. I'll use an icon of him because he's a great host.

- I don't really like the montage of musicals in the beginning. I'm already seeing the musicals individually when they perform. I don't need all those songs at the beginning. I like incorporating the host in them but I think that they can do something else.

- Scarlett? Really? Okay. Here's my thing with Hollywood and Broadway. I believe that there are talented actors who can cross from one medium to the other successfully. I don't doubt that. But, when they win awards? It always makes me think that they're just giving that person the award because they're known. I'm talking like ... popularity contest. You know? I don't know if I can buy Scarlett winning or Catherine Zeta Jones. Kate Baldwin was ROBBED!

- Musicals this year? Eh. I'm not interested in any of them. You'd think that I'd sway toward American Idiot but I don't.

- I know a lot of people like Lea and Jonathan. I used to until I witnessed their obnoxiousness in person. Now whenever I see them together, I want to punch one of them in the face.

- Beyonce and Jay-Z. Can someone explain this to me? Do they have something to do with Fela? Same question for Will Smith and Jada. Why?

- Did I zone out when Finian's Rainbow performed or did they really not perform?

- All in all ... I'm eager for next year. Hopefully I can get my butt to New York to see some of these. Waiting on the Lea Salonga/BD Wong collaboration that's supposed to happen in '11. Oh! And I'm interested in the revival of Evita. I would seriously die a little bit to see that on Broadway. I hope it doesn't suck.

Also, that Randy web episode today was hysterical! I'm going to spend the evening watching the past episodes. The comedy reminds me of The Guild except with theater instead of video games. All equally entertaining.

I saw American Idiot last month, and it was..okay. I wasn't all that impressed with it, the best part was the lighting and the visual storytelling aspect of it but otherwise. Meh.

I used to like Lea and Jonathan, I loved them in Spring Awakening, but nowadays I am so. irritated with them. I'm not a fan of Glee, in fact I kind of hate it - I wanted to like it because of Lea but now...ugh. Just, ugh. I used to think that Jonathan was the most adorable person on the planet, but now he just kind of annoys me, too. I kind of get the feeling that he's using his friendship with Lea to get work on the show, not intentionally of course, but really, if it wasn't for her, he would not be on it. I don't mean this to sound bitchy or anything, or that I'm spreading hate onto your own journal, I'm just saying I agree with your comment about their obnoxiousness!

Yeah, I just don't see the appeal of taking a CD and turning it into a musical. I'm all for rock musicals. I love Rent and Spring Awakening but CDs to musical theater? I just can't get behind that. And Green Day's been ingrained in me all my life. I'm a California girl, 100%. But, their presence seemed inappropriate at the Tony Awards. I felt the same way watching Rock of Ages last year.

No, I agree! I was going to say (but I thought it was too bitchy) that Matthew Morrison and Lea Michele only return to this show and Broadway when it's convenient for them. The way that they've been talking about Broadway now that they're on television has a tone of ... arrogance. I know a lot of Broadway performers want something like that but it just seems obnoxious. Jonathan and Lea have the strangest relationship that I've ever seen two people have. They always look like they want to fuck each other and that totally weirds me out!

Yeah, the concept behind American Idiot, and for Rock of Ages - which I haven't seen and don't really care to - don't appeal to me. I saw AI for John Gallagher Jr. in all honesty, and in the end he didn't even impress me that much. I think the reason that I don't like turning CDs into musicals is because it's trying to build a story around prewritten lyrics, and in the end, it doesn't hold up. AI just kind of fell flat because of it, it was trying to build something out of nothing.

I don't talk about Glee on LJ because the topic hasn't come up, except once or twice on the lure comm, like when people were talking about how ESS could be on it and I had to hold my tongue in on that, and because I stopped watching in December because I was so freaking fed up and disappointed with it, so as of now I have nothing to complain about in regards to it, but trust me, if I did talk about it, I would get CRAZY BITCHY. Seriously. So yeah. I know what you mean. Jonathan and Lea...just. Bleh. I get that they had to simulate sex onstage with each other like, 500 times, but that is no excuse to constantly be all over each other and groping each other and. Yeah. It's bizarre.

Here's my take on the Lea number --

Audition for a revival of "Funny Girl" -- no kidding.
I predict it will happen in the next couple of years.

Bottom line --

There are NO new musicals -- and I mean REAL musicals.
And that's a huge problem for Broadway and the Tonys.
These greatest hits things do not cut it. Period.

Unfortunately, they're already reviving it for next season or '12. Either way, if Lea's in it, I'm going to have to hit something v. v. hard. I am not won over by her loudness.

You're right. I'm holding out for something different next season that doesn't have a CD in it, 80's hair bands, music from the 50's, yet another Movin' Out type show that shouldn't count as a musical. I better not hold my breath.

I'm with you there. The intention of the album was not to make it into a Broadway musical. It is what it was created to be and they're rock anthems for the concert set. But, they're not for Broadway.

I can't watch Glee and take it seriously. If I did, I'd be pulling my hair out. I only watch it for what it is and I have absolutely no expectations for it. I was hopeful when it first came out but with all the inconsistencies, continuity problems, characterization problems, I don't know how it's a real show. Exactly -- about Lea and JGroff. I will just try to ignore them from this point on and their weirdness.

Fresh, new musicals are certainly not commonplace anymore on Broadway. It's quite sad.

I'm not sure what happened when you met Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, but I do love their voices. Their characters on GLEE have many flaws.

I was disappointed that Lea sang the same song in the same style as she did in GLEE. She should have come up with something new for the Tony's or don't accept the invite.

I'm thinking Scarlett must have given one hell of a performance. I didn't see the play.

This is off-topic in relation to our discussion but it's about American Idiot and I felt like mentioning it. xD
I just remembered this, there was an old lady and her friend sitting in front of me when I saw AI and literally a minute in to the first song, she got up and left. The friend stayed. I don't know if it was because it was too loud for her or what, but, um, lady? You paid a hundred bucks for these seats. o.O She never came back.

There was also a mother with her two boys who were about 8 years old and she had to get them pillows to serve as booster seats since they were too small to see over the seats. I don't like dictating what parents should allow their kids to see, but, um, that play was way inappropriate for kids that age. Just because your kids like Green Day does not make that an ideal show for them to see. Grr.

I thought Hayes was pretty good, but...

I don't like him. I didn't like him on "W&G" and
I didn't like him even more after he "came out" in
such a snotty way, especially in his "Advocate" interview.
I don't think he's particularly funny, but I guess he's
okay. I'd have loved to see someone really talented,
like Cheyenne Jackson, host, but he's not famous enough --
at least not yet.

It is sad! It's down right depressing. I'm waiting for the musical to return.

I love Jonathan Groff's voice. He can sing to me anytime, haha. The characters on Glee are ridiculous. I agree with you about Lea. Matt managed to sing something new that demonstrated his abilities but Lea ... not really.

Supposedly -- about Scarlett -- but I don't know. I can't say anything about the play but I know I haven't heard anything specific about her performance. I just don't know about these popular Hollywood celebrities winning Tony's. Something seems off there.

Thank you! You should take it and we'll be icon twins, haha. I loved me some Will and Grace. :(( Too bad they don't have any of the good DVD sets out.

Yeah, his coming out was really horrible. I think Cheyenne would do a really great job! Must've been busy on 30 Rock, not really. Don't know where he could've been. Kate Baldwin and Christopher Fitzgerald were there. Then again, they were nominated.

Ha, I'd like that! :) I think I actually have a couple of W&G icons saved somewhere, so that's defo something I'm gonna look into for the next big userpic revision.

Cheyenne is hosting the NewNowNext Awards on Logo --
not sure when it's showing, maybe next week. Apparently
he did a great job.

Here's my beef with W&G -- other than Megan Mullally
and Sean Hayes made me want to kick them so hard I
finally stopped watching the show.

When they all did the Big Gay Vanity Fair shoot, they
were mucho pissy about Gale Harold (who????) sharing
"their" cover with them -- although Carson Kressley
was thrilled to have Gale lying in his lap (this is
actually from someone who talked to Carson about it --
he said Gale was ultra sweet and smelled yummy! I love
that detail!). So a big old FU to W&G in my book.

MM is apparently such a supreme bitch that they had to
cancel her production at the Roundabout (where Gale did
"Suddenly Last Summer") because she wanted her co-star
fired and the director refused. So the entire play was
canceled. She has a horrible rep in NY theater -- that's
the second time she's pulled the prima donna act in a
major play.
