2. It's a brand new month and I've decided I need a little more focus and need to get some things done this month. So, I'm giving myself the challenge of doing NaBloPoMo. It's easier to do these since I have a Blackberry now and I don't have an excuse to miss a day. The theme of this month is Looking Up as in "things are looking up" and I think that that's an important message to convey. So, I'll be writing something once a day. I'm going to try to make some public entries but there are some that I have to lock up and those are going into the 'friends only' zone.

For anyone who hasn't seen it, you should all be a witness to the wonderful Twilight (yes, I said Twilight) recaps that she's posted here and here and there's even an awesome video right over here. I mean, they're all brilliant. No, I'm not home yet but I'm almost there. I'm in Korea again waiting for the next flight. I think that it's in another 40 minutes or so. We'll be leaving here around 7 in the evening and arriving in California at 1 in the afternoon. Good times, good times. The thing about Ree is she is the most spoiler-free person I know. If there are spoilers on the 'net, then you keep them away from her. I've tried to do the spoiler-free thing but I am usually unsuccessful. Ree? She is made of STEEL or something else that makes you completely indestructible to the spoilers that roam the net. I didn't think it was possible but Ree has proven that it is possible. Therefore, I will forever remember the day that she willingly broke her spoiler resistance and Luke and Noah are the couple who made her do it. It is an event that is to be written in the reference guide. It happened on January 10, 2009.

So, I started this little project because I wanted to look back and find some icons that I remember wanting to save again in url_girl's journal. It started out innocently enough. Then, I just kept going through icons and posts after posts of really memorable moments that I wanted to post about for nostalgia purposes. Finally, I just decided to turn it into a Ree Raid Project.
Fandom is an interesting place. Ultimately, fandom can be a very happy place and I think that Ree's journal is that happy place. She's posted icons, written stories, pastede on hedz that make everyone laugh. She's not selfish with her offerings, always willing to share something that she finds with everyone so that many can see what they may not be able to see where they are (example: Qaf alum activities but particularly Gale and Randy). So, in honor of her birthday and her five year anniversary here on LJ, we have the Ode to Ree.
Ree's first icons date back to August 16, 2004. Now, I've always loved her icons. Why? You know you have a great icon maker when they immediately catch your eye (in a good way). Look at her sense of humor:

So, I think that I'm all caught up on her icons for Queer as Folk anyway. You mean that there are more awesome icons that she does? You are correct my friends. When Ree ventured into the world of Luke and Noah on As the World Turns, I went all Scooby Doo on her. "Bzzzzuhhh?" Were my exact words if I remember correctly. But, what can I say, pretty, good looking men in a dramatic/sweet storyline on television? Count me in. Not only has she made wonderful icons for that fandom but also incredible recaps that are not only detailed but her observations are hee-larious. Coming up in Part II!

Also! Also! A year ago today I interviewed for a job and got it (after several months of unemployment) so yet another reason to celebrate today, yay! It's really a good day over all isn't it?
Oh and apparently not a lot of people have heard this story. I posted this on friday82's journal this morning: I know the people who were at the Paley Festival will get this but one of my favorites is when everyone in the panel was talking about how they got the job on Queer as Folk. They told their usual stories, nothing that anyone hasn't heard before, and then when they got to Gale he said, "I WON IT AT A RAFFLE!" It was loud, enthusiastic, and complete with southern accent. Everyone laughed and then it got silent, waiting for him to continue to tell the real story, but he just kind of shrugged and said that that was all that he wanted to say and then they moved on to someone else.
Seriously. Kills me every time I think about it.
For starters today, birthday question. Is it lennongirl's birthday? Ani, if it's your birthday today or tomorrow or yesterday, happy birthday! I'm sure that you're doing something awesome over there at home. Hee.
Now in relation to Six Feet Under, as you know or don't know, I had a Six Feet Under marathon recently. I watched the series over a week and will probably be rewatching the episodes in the next few weeks to be able to digest more of it. It really is so poignant and so incredibly well-written and it probably has the best series finale that I've seen, ever. No weird fade to blacks, no last happy scene without knowing about what happened to them in the future. Charmed came close to this but of course not as powerful or insightful.
That said, there are a lot of issues brought up throughout the series but one in particular stood out to me. Lost recaps constantly observe that any time anyone on that show has an issue, it's usually a "Daddy Issue". Six Feet Under wasn't an exception. There was Keith's feelings toward his father. Nathaniel Sr. popped up throughout the entire series and the children analyzed their relationship with him. In Queer as Folk, Brian's father beat him and Michael never knew his father and Justin's dad disowned him.
Why do you think that television shows explore the father dynamic more than the mother dynamic? Is it more powerful to explore the more masculine dynamic? Is it just because fathers do often abandon their children or cause some kind of traumatic experience in childhood that continues to affect that child as an adult?
I'm always thinking about the parental dynamic in Disney movies because the fathers are almost always around and they kill the mothers. In movies that aren't animated, the girl raised by her father (without any siblings or female siblings) always appears as a tomboy because she hasn't had that female exposure. Disney female characters (princesses) seen so in touch with their femininity.
So, why is the paternal dynamic more prevalent in television?
I just cried while watching the trailer. I'm a sucker.
